Chiel Construction successfully delivered the creation of a Japanese Peace Garden within Coventry’s War Memorial Park, providing a tranquil and reflective space developed in collaboration with the Coventry Peace and Reconciliation Committee, the Friends of Allesley Park, and five local primary schools.

Delivered as a charitable project, the scheme was procured via competitive tender and completed over a 9-week programme. The works comprised a full package of landscaping and construction activities, including site excavation, formation of foundations, and construction of structural blockwork elements. External finishes were completed with high-quality rendering, carefully aligned with the aesthetic and cultural intent of a traditional Japanese garden setting.

As Principal Contractor, Chiel Construction worked closely with a range of community stakeholders, coordinating input from educational groups and local organisations to ensure the vision for the space was sensitively realised. The project required careful planning and collaboration to deliver a design that not only met construction requirements but also reflected the symbolic importance of peace and reconciliation for the local community.

The works were undertaken within a live public park environment, requiring consideration of public safety, site security, and minimal disruption. Coordination of construction activities, material deliveries, and site operations was managed to maintain accessibility and safety throughout the works.

The completed Japanese Peace Garden now provides Coventry with a meaningful, accessible outdoor space that promotes reflection, learning, and community engagement. The project stands as a lasting contribution to the city, supporting educational use by local schools while reinforcing the values of peace and reconciliation within a well-crafted landscaped setting.
