Arts Building Offices & Lecture Theatre
Client: The University of Birmingham
Location: Arts Building
Value: £565K

Chiel Construction successfully delivered the refurbishment of the Arts Building Lecture Theatre and associated office spaces at the University of Birmingham, enhancing both functionality and overall aesthetic quality.
Working under a JCT Minor Works Building Contract with Contractor’s Design (2011 Edition), procured via competitive tender, the project involved a comprehensive internal refurbishment programme within a live educational environment.
The scope of works included asbestos removal and full strip-out of existing finishes, followed by the installation of new feature wall cladding, decorative ceiling systems, feature lighting, and upgraded floor finishes throughout. The lecture theatre was enhanced with replacement seating and writing surfaces, alongside automated roller blinds and new bespoke door sets.
Mechanical, electrical, and AV systems were upgraded and adapted to suit the new layout, with new suspended ceilings and associated services integration ensuring a modern and cohesive internal environment. Offices within the building were also refurbished with new finishes and decoration to align with the overall scheme.
Delivered over an 11-week programme, the project required careful planning and coordination to minimise disruption within the operational university setting while maintaining programme and quality standards.
The completed scheme provides a refreshed, contemporary learning and working environment, enhancing the user experience for both students and staff.
