Chiel Construction successfully delivered the installation of a new external lift shaft at The University of Birmingham School, Selly Oak, improving accessibility while maintaining the character of the existing building.

Working under a JCT Intermediate Building Contract with Contractor’s Design, procured via competitive tender, the project involved the construction of a prefabricated concrete lift shaft with structural connections to the existing facility. The design was carefully developed to ensure the finished installation complemented the original architecture, appearing as an integrated element of the building.

The works included groundworks to form lift pit foundations, removal and replacement of existing curtain walling, installation of new steel link platforms, and the formation of internal fire-rated walls and ceilings. Internal finishes were completed to match the existing building, alongside full electrical installations including new lighting, power, data, and sub-main connections. The project also included coordination with specialist suppliers for the lift installation, along with associated builder’s work in connection with services.

Delivered within a live school environment, the project required careful planning to maintain safe access, with temporary segregation measures and working restrictions in place throughout. Additional challenges included evolving building regulation requirements, supply chain delays, and coordination with existing structures, all of which were successfully managed to maintain programme and quality standards.

The project was completed over an 18-week programme, delivering a fully operational lift installation that enhances accessibility and functionality while seamlessly integrating with the existing school environment.
