Chiel Construction successfully delivered the refurbishment and reconfiguration of a high dependency student accommodation flat at the University of Warwick, creating a fully accessible, specialist living environment tailored to the needs of wheelchair users.

Working under a JCT Intermediate Building Contract (2016 Edition), procured via competitive tender, our team undertook an 11-week programme of internal alterations within Sherbourne Residences. The project involved combining two existing student accommodation units to form a larger, single high-dependency living space.

The works included strip-out and demolition of existing partitions, followed by the construction of new internal layouts to accommodate a purpose-built accessible bathroom. This included the installation of high specification, automated DDA-compliant sanitaryware, alongside bespoke elements such as a custom door and frame designed to integrate with a ceiling-mounted hoist system.

Additional works comprised new flooring, wall finishes, and ceilings, incorporating integrated hoist rails and upgraded lighting. Enhanced accessibility was further achieved through the installation of new external door access controls to support independent use by wheelchair users.

As Principal Contractor, Chiel Construction carefully managed the delivery within a live student accommodation environment, ensuring minimal disruption to surrounding residents while maintaining a safe and controlled working area. Close coordination with the design team ensured that all specialist accessibility requirements were fully met.

The project was successfully delivered to programme, providing the University of Warwick with a high-quality, fully accessible living space that supports inclusive accommodation and meets the specific needs of high dependency users.
