Breast Cancer Haven Conversion
Client: Breast Cancer Haven
Location: St Bernards Road, Solihull
Value: £517K

Chiel Construction successfully delivered the conversion and refurbishment of a former Bed and Breakfast property into a Breast Cancer Haven Respite Centre in Solihull, providing a welcoming and fully functional support environment for individuals affected by breast cancer.
Working under a JCT Intermediate Building Contract with Contractor’s Design (2011 Edition), procured via competitive tender, our team undertook a 10-week programme of works, carefully managed to accommodate additional structural challenges identified during the initial strip-out phase. The project was delivered with a strong focus on maintaining programme certainty and budget control, ensuring the client’s opening date was achieved.
The scope of works comprised a full strip-out, structural modifications, and an extension to the existing building, followed by a comprehensive refurbishment. Internal works included new layouts, installations, and finishes designed to create a comfortable, functional, and supportive environment. Mechanical and electrical systems were upgraded, and high-quality fixtures and fittings were installed throughout to meet operational and user requirements.
As Principal Contractor, Chiel Construction maintained close communication with the client throughout, ensuring transparency around unforeseen structural issues and collaboratively identifying efficient cost and programme solutions. Site management maintained rigorous quality control processes to achieve a high standard of finish, targeting a ‘snag-free’ handover.
Prior to completion, thorough testing and commissioning were carried out, alongside staff training to ensure smooth operation of the building’s systems from day one. Following handover, our team maintained a discreet on-site presence to support the client with final adjustments, ensuring a seamless transition into occupation.
The project was successfully completed to a high standard, delivering a modern, fit-for-purpose respite centre that provides a safe, comfortable, and supportive environment for its users, while meeting the client’s operational needs and expectations.
