Chiel Construction successfully delivered the demolition of the existing sports hall and the construction of a new state-of-the-art four-court sports facility at Swanshurst School in Birmingham. The project provides a significant enhancement to the school's sporting infrastructure, creating a modern, energy-efficient environment for both educational and community use.

Working under a JCT Design and Build Contract 2016, the £3.2 million project was procured through a competitive tender process and delivered over a 56-week programme. The development involved the construction of a new four-court sports hall, together with modern changing accommodation, toilet facilities, office space, and associated external works, delivering a comprehensive upgrade to the school's sports provision.

The project included the installation of full mechanical and electrical services throughout the facility, incorporating energy-efficient building systems and photovoltaic (PV) panels to support the school's sustainability objectives. Extensive commissioning and testing were undertaken to ensure all systems operated efficiently and met the performance requirements of the end user.

Delivered within a live and fully operational school environment, the scheme required careful planning and coordination to maintain the safety of pupils, staff, and visitors while minimising disruption to day-to-day activities. Temporary access routes, robust safeguarding measures, and detailed logistics planning were implemented throughout the construction programme to ensure the continued operation of the school campus.

A key project milestone involved completing and handing over the new sports hall prior to the demolition of the existing facility, ensuring continuity of sports and physical education provision throughout the works. Particular attention was given to managing noise, dust, and vibration, while maintaining compliance with planning requirements, building regulations, and the school's operational constraints.

Completed on programme and within budget, the new sports hall now provides Swanshurst School with a modern, flexible, and sustainable sports facility that supports both curriculum delivery and wider community engagement. The development represents a significant investment in the school's future, providing high-quality facilities that will benefit students and local users for many years to come.
